When and by whom was the United Nations founded?
On October 24, 1945, the United Nations was formally established. That was 76 years ago this year.

The organization was founded in direct reaction to the Second World War, which left several nations in a condition of ruin.
Between April and June 1945, international leaders convened in San Francisco, California, as the war came to an end, to resolve that a comparable global conflict should never happen again.
In June, a treaty was developed and ratified by 50 nations. On September 2, 1945, the war ended, and the charter took effect on October 24.
Poland was one of the 51 founding members of the United Nations, which signed the UN charter on October 15, a later date than the other founding countries.
Among the 50 original members were China, France, Brazil, the United Kingdom, the United States, the Soviet Union (as Russia was known at the time), Iran, Lebanon, India, Turkey, Australia, and South Africa.

Ethiopia, Greece, Denmark, Norway, and Argentina were among the nations that joined from Africa, Europe, and the Americas.
Czechoslovakia (now Czech Republic and Slovakia) and Yugoslavia (now Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Slovenia, North Macedonia, and Montenegro) were also among the first nations to establish the United Nations.
What was the motivation for the establishment of the United Nations?
When previously stated, the United Nations was established as the Second World War came to a close.
In 1944, the United Kingdom, the United States, China, and Russia (then the Soviet Union) initiated discussions to form a peacekeeping organization with the goal of preventing a Third World War.
It was also intended to take the place of an existing alliance, the League of Nations, which, as we all know, failed to prevent World War II.

To avert war on such magnitude, those four states plus France, together with ten other nonpermanent members, create the Security Council, which attempts to safeguard the peace between all countries of the globe.
This is one of the six ‘organs’ (functions) that make up the United Nations today.
Important international concerns are debated amongst member nations via the General Assembly. Each of the 193 nations is given the opportunity to send a delegate. There is also an Economic and Social Council, which would deal with environmental concerns.
There is also a Trusteeship Council, whose primary objective is to aid various nations in their quest to become self-governing and independent countries.
The Secretariat oversees the organization’s day-to-day operations, and the International Court of Justice is based in The Hague, Netherlands.
The latter is exactly what it says: an international court that is the only one of its kind in the world to hear country-by-country disputes. It also serves as an international arbitrator.
