Vince Carter is a player whose NBA career has been marked by two contrasting fortunes: He was once among the league’s elite, and he is now one of its most wildly symbolic figures. It’s been a wildly eventful career for the star shooting guard, who has experienced the highs of back-to-back NBA Finals and a first-team all-defensive selection—and the lows of a career-making injury and drug relapse.
In 1993, Vince Carter, a 6-foot-5 All-American from Miami, joined the N.C. State Wolfpack and was selected the ACC Freshman of the Year. After winning a gold medal at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics and a gold medal at the 1994 World Cup, Carter was traded to the Toronto Raptors in 1998 and quickly became a member of the Raptors’ legendary ‘Core Four’ duo.
When it comes to famous athletes, Vince Carter may not have the resume of some of our other professional athletes, but he has made a name for himself in the world of basketball. He is one of the most prolific scorers in the history of the NBA, with over 18,000 points scored throughout his career. He was recently featured in a documentary entitled “The Carter Effect,” which was one of the highest rated documentaries of the year for its release on Netflix.
Only Robert Parish and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar have participated in more NBA regular-season games (1,541). No one had played longer than the guy nicknamed “Half-Man/Half-Amazing” when the eight-time All-Star retired at the conclusion of the 2019–20 season. Carter has played in more NBA seasons than Parish, Kevin Willis, Kevin Garnett, and Dirk Nowitzki combined. On the Crackle Plus Networks in the autumn of 2021, a documentary on his record career will debut.
Exclusive conversations with NBA legends and never-before-seen video are included in Vince Carter: Legacy. Rather than concentrating only on Carter’s famous playing career, the film seeks to define Carter’s position in the game. Vince Carter made his NBA debut during the lockout-shortened 1998–99 season, when four different presidents inhabited the White House. Carter’s term began with Bill Clinton’s last years in office and continued through George W. Bush’s and Barack Obama’s administrations, as well as the majority of Donald Trump’s.
As Air Canada, he was a superstar, bringing the Toronto Raptors to prominence for the first time, and subsequently, the New Jersey Nets. But he basically had two careers since he played for so long.
From 1999 until 2009, he was a legend with the Raptors and Nets. But the shift to role player from 2010 to 20 was as remarkable; few athletes have 11-year careers, much alone two.
Carter appeared in eight straight All-Star Games from 2000 to 2007, was selected All-NBA twice, and was the NBA Rookie of the Year in 1998–99. His career needed one thing: a championship ring. Only 11 of his teams made the playoffs. With the Orlando Magic in the 2010 Eastern Conference Finals, he went as far as he had ever gone in the playoffs.
He made the shift from high-flyer to spare part over the course of 22 seasons. He finished 19th all-time with more over 25,000 points. Some may argue that he doesn’t deserve to be in the Hall of Fame since he spent so much time collecting data, but he still averaged 16.7 points per game throughout his career. That record was 23.5 in his first 11 seasons.
Carter delighted a generation of admirers, and then some.
Vince Carter’s performance in the 2000 Slam Dunk Contest sparked “Vinsanity” early in his career. Carter impressed the audience with his lone appearance at the All-Star Weekend event.
Carter put down the dunk heard around the world in the 2000 Sydney Olympics later that year. He overcame 7-foot-2 French big man Frédéric Weis, a former New York Knicks first-round selection.
Carter won the Twyman-Stokes Teammate of the Year award while with the Memphis Grizzlies in 2015–16. At the time, he was teaching young players how to be NBA pros, thus his influence extended beyond statistics.
That element of his career is just as much a part of the film as his incredible list of accomplishments.

Vince Carter: Legacy was put together by THINK450. The company collaborates with the NBA Players Association to provide material about the union’s members. The firm was given unique access to film Carter’s last season with the Atlanta Hawks, according to Deadline.
It’s about more than dunks and jump shots, according to Anthony Rodriguez of Lineage, which co-produced the film.
