What Canadian Tourists Should Know About Sports Betting Rules

For many travellers, sport is part of the appeal of visiting Canada. An NHL game, an NBA matchup, or a CFL fixture can be as memorable as any landmark. For some visitors, placing a bet is part of the experience too.

Sports betting is legal in Canada, but the rules are far from uniform. Tourists who expect the same setup from coast to coast are often surprised. If you want more background before your trip, you can learn more about sports betting in Canada on this page

Retail betting is available in some provinces, but online platforms are often the more practical option for visitors. So this guide focuses mainly on online betting rules and access. Here is what tourists, interprovincial travellers and international visitors should know before betting on sports in Canada.

A Short History of Legal Sports Betting in Canada

For decades, Canadian sports betting was limited to parlay wagers through provincial lotteries. Single-event betting, the kind most sports fans know from other countries, was illegal under the federal Criminal Code.

That changed in 2021. Bill C-218, the Safe and Regulated Sports Betting Act, was a private member’s bill introduced by MP Kevin Waugh. It amended the Criminal Code to allow provinces and territories to operate single-event sports betting.

The bill received Royal Assent on 29 June 2021, and the changes came into force on 27 August 2021. Horse racing stayed under separate federal rules.

The practical effect was huge. Every province could now decide how to offer legal single-event wagering, and each one chose a slightly different path.

Ontario Has a Unique Market

Ontario has taken a different approach from the rest of Canada. In April 2022, the province launched a competitive iGaming market overseen by the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario and iGaming Ontario. Private sportsbooks can apply for licences and compete directly for customers.

This means sportsbooks in Ontario include familiar international brands alongside Canadian operators. Dozens of regulated betting sites are now active in the province, offering thousands of markets across pro and college sports.

Tourists visiting Toronto, Ottawa or any other Ontario city who want to bet online can register with a regulated site. Verification usually requires a piece of government identification, and you’ll need to be physically present in the province when betting.

Other Provinces Have Monopoly Models

Outside Ontario, regulated sports betting is generally offered through province-specific platforms. British Columbia bettors use PlayNow, operated by the British Columbia Lottery Corporation (BCLC), while Manitobans use PlayNow Manitoba, overseen by Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries (MBLL).

Quebec offers Mise-o-jeu+ through Loto-Québec. PlayNow Saskatchewan is operated by the Saskatchewan Indian Gaming Authority (SIGA). The Atlantic provinces share Proline Stadium through the Atlantic Lottery Corporation (ALC). These platforms have their own apps, terms, and odds.

Alberta’s official platform is Play Alberta, run by Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis (AGLC). However, it is moving toward a competitive private model similar to Ontario’s. Because that transition is underway, visitors should check the current regulatory setup before travelling.

For tourists, the key point is that the official regulated betting site varies by province. Private offshore sportsbooks may look similar, but local authorities do not regulate them. As such, they do not offer the same level of oversight or consumer protection as provincially regulated platforms.

Legal Betting Age Across Canada

The legal age to place a sports bet varies by province. In Alberta, Manitoba and Quebec, the age is 18. In Ontario, British Columbia, Saskatchewan and the Atlantic provinces, it is 19. The Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut also set the limit at 19.

Operators verify age during account registration and, in many cases, at retail kiosks as well. A valid passport or driver’s licence is usually the simplest form of identification for visitors. Without proper verification, operators may restrict betting, withdrawals or account access.

Practical Tips for Visitors

Plan ahead. If you are planning a trip to Montreal, you might want to check the Mise-o-jeu+ requirements before you travel. That way, you will know what is needed to open an account and bet online during your visit. Most provincial platforms require you to be physically present in the province when registering and wagering.

Check which sports markets you can actually access. Ontario’s competitive market usually offers the widest range of NHL, NFL, NBA and international football lines. Provincial monopolies elsewhere tend to be more focused on mainstream leagues.

When betting online, every legal operator uses geolocation software to verify your physical location. Turn off VPNs before placing a wager. Attempting to disguise your location can lead to failed wagers, account restrictions or additional verification checks.

Deposits usually work with Interac e-Transfer for Canadian users or platform-specific vouchers. International credit cards can be hit-or-miss, so visitors from outside Canada may want to plan a funding method in advance of their visit.

Responsible Betting Applies to Tourists Too

Canada takes problem gambling seriously. Every regulated operator offers deposit limits, time-out periods and self-exclusion tools. These apply to tourists as much as to residents.

If you set a deposit or spending limit and change your mind, most platforms include a cooling-off period before the limit increases. That is a feature, not a flaw, and it is part of the reason Canadian betting sites are considered relatively safe compared with many unregulated alternatives.

The Bottom Line for Travellers

Sports betting in Canada is legal, well-regulated and increasingly easy to access, but it is not a single unified market. Rules change as soon as you cross a provincial border. Tourists who understand the basics will have a much smoother experience and plenty more time to enjoy the actual games.
